  • Heaven is a Place on Earth with Lana Del Rey & Billie Eilish

Lana Del Rey, the queen of melancholy ballads, who changes the way we see music, made a grand return to Coachella, managing to outshine the moon itself with her cinematic entrance on the back of a motorcycle. As festival-goers cruised along Indio Blvd, Lana's cheeky billboard asking "Has anyone else died for you?" couldn't be missed, underscoring the enigmatic aura that surrounds Lana's artistry. But what set hearts racing through the festival was Lana's surprise guest appearance, none other than Billie Eilish, the ultimate duo. Emerging from backstage, Eilish joined Lana on a gilded balcony overlooking the main stage, declaring to the audience that Lana Del Rey: "Is the reason for half you bitches’ existence!" - Billie Eilish Eilish and Lana mesmerized the crowd with her hit, "Ocean Eyes" and then Lana's most iconic song, "Video Games" transforming the entire audience into their harmonious love fest. Lana's set list was a nostalgic journey through her hits with a prelude version of "Jealous Girl" making a dramatic entrance on the back of that motorcycle. From there, hits like "West Coast" "Summertime Sadness" and "Born to Die". each song dripping with Americana symbolism and dreamlike poetry. The Coachella set was just one stop on her festival tour this year, with her teasing a forthcoming country album, "Lasso" expected in September. Meanwhile, Eilish is gearing up to release her third album, "Hit Me Hard and Soft" following her recent Oscar win for "What Was I Made For?" - a Barbie ballad that captured hearts worldwide. And if you're following Lana on Instagram @honeymoon you probably caught her heartfelt thank-you message to her team. Interestingly, her longtime tour manager, Pete, decided to call it quits just one month before the show. Sometimes, when stars align or when key figures dip out, it's a catalyst for greater things. Lana shines brighter than ever. Catch Lana Del Rey's Coachella performance on YouTube.

  • A Summer to Remember with Taylor Swift

One summer weekend in Melbourne where Taylor Swift played the biggest show of her life. A world record-breaking crowd is not just a concert, it's a cultural phenomenon. We're talking about a crowd so massive that even Taylor herself couldn't believe her eyes. Melbourne, I am starstruck - Taylor Swift Melbourne didn't just roll out the red carpet for Taylor, they practically paved the streets with glitter. From Swift-themed academic symposiums to lighting up Flinders St Station, the anticipation leading up to the Eras Tour was palpable. And let me tell you, getting seats to the sold out show was harder than winning a golden ticket to Willy Wonka's chocolate factory in 1971. The Eras Tour, the highest-grossing tour of all time (yes, you read that right!) With 96,000 fans in attendance three nights in a row and thousands outside on the grass at Melbourne’s MCG stadium, it was the crescendo of Swift's career. This is the biggest show that I have done on this tour or any tour ever - Taylor Swift Now, let me confess, I was a little late to the Taylor Swift game. Don’t get me wrong, it's not like I hadn’t danced to her catchy hits, but I didn’t know all the albums by heart. It wasn't until I found myself on a road trip across Australia, with zero service, that my Spotify kept playing Taylor, a moment of fate that would have me lost in the middle of nowhere with nothing but Taylor Swift. That's how it happened. Outside the MCG stadium was its own Coachella, complete with ice cream stands, food trucks, and several merch booths. Everyone knows I'm extremely passionate about merch. As I associate happiness with material objects. So of course, I waited for 45 minutes in line to get an official Taylor Swift Era’s Tour T-shirt for $65. All the small sizes were sold out, so I got a medium, which honestly is more like an XXL, but hey, it is official and is says "Van Nuys, CA, 91402" so I will wear it. But let's talk about the real stars of the show, the fans. Melbourne Swifties brought their A-game, with costumes crafted with painstaking devotion over years. Bedazzled cowboy boots, hair braids adorned with diamonds – they spared no expense in their sartorial tributes. It was a spectacle fit for the screen, Baz Luhrmann himself would be jealous. Personally, the standout for me was "Lonely Starbucks Lover" not just because I have an undeniable caffeine addiction, but also due to the inspiring level of simplicity put into his creation. The excitement was so overwhelming, I needed extra sugar. After lining up to get three cinnamon donuts for $5 and an ice-coffee for $8 (inspired by Lonely Starbucks Lover), a little girl about five years old approached me on the grass and handed me a pink friendship bracelet with "LOVER" written on it. It was so sweet, I wanted to give her something back, but I had already inhaled all the donuts! So, I settled for a hug and took this photo instead. As for the vibes inside the stadium - Electric doesn't begin to cover it. From start to finish, Taylor delivered a masterclass in entertainment, clocking in an impressive three and a half hours of pure euphoria. Each album Era was meticulously represented, from the dreamy hues of Lover to the gritty edge of Reputation. Complete with wristbands that changed colour and communicated secret codes to the Swifties, genius! Witnessing the entire stadium erupt as the colour changed to Red, you see her fans know what this means and they start singing the song before she can. But amidst all the glitz and glam, there is an authenticity to Taylor's performance. Sure, some banter may have been scripted, but the tears she shed during "Champagne Problems" were real. And the emotional rollercoaster that was the 10-minute rendition of "All Too Well”. But perhaps the most touching moment was when Taylor stopped mid show, removed her earplugs, and stared out at crowd awestruck for what must have only been a few minutes (but felt longer) it was the kind of moment that gives you goosebumps. My friend Emily has a cool story, she spotted Papa Swift (Taylor's Dad) by the stage. Legend has it that he attends every show and carries Taylor's guitar picks in his pocket to hand out to a lucky fan. I was feeling brave, so I walked up to him, said hello, and offered him a bracelet I made, it said 'Peace' the title of one of my favourite songs from Folklore, which he graciously accepted and gave me a 'Long Live' one. He then reached into his pocket and handed me two Midnights themed guitar picks. Elated, I said "thank you so much" and skipped back to my seat - Emily Don't believe me? Check out her Insta video. Let me tell you, there's nothing quite like belting out "Are You Ready For It!!!" at the top of your lungs with 96 thousand of your closest friends. It was raw, emotional, and magical. With voices hoarse from singing our hearts out, it was clear, Taylor Swift sure does bring people together. The Eras Tour wasn't just a concert, it was a musical event that changed culture and we were pretty lucky to be there. Thanks to Canon Australia

  • Silhouettes in the Dust 'The Royal Hotel' by Kitty Green

In Kitty Green's cinematic realm, the expansive Australian Outback transforms into a captivating canvas in her latest film, The Royal Hotel. Teaming up once again with Julia Garner, the radiant star of The Assistant, Green weaves a narrative that delves into the mysterious depths of a remote Australian pub, laying bare the nightly trials faced by two resilient backpackers. Set in a rural Outback town where phone reception is elusive, Hanna (Garner) and Liv (Jessica Henwick) find themselves as barmaids, navigating a landscape fraught with hostility after depleting their funds in Sydney. The austere setting, simultaneously unwelcoming and paradoxically inviting, serves as the backdrop for encounters with an alcoholic boss, Billy (Hugo Weaving), and a clientele of handsy, inebriated men. The camaraderie between Hanna and Liv, a potential comedic duo, takes a dark turn as they confront insidious misogyny, transforming the film into a profound exploration of Australia's drinking culture. In Australia, we have this way of talking about things, where we’re like, don’t worry about him. He’s alright. Even when someone’s a little funny, we often put up with it. I was trying to highlight that sometimes it’s OK to stand up for yourself and say no - Green Within the dimly lit passages of The Royal Hotel, Green spins a tale echoing her own wanderlust-filled youth. Drawing inspiration from her couch-surfing adventures through Europe, the film portrays the dynamic friendship between Hanna and Liv—a poignant reflection of the cautious and carefree duality of travel companions. It’s about two young women standing up for themselves. I don’t know if older generations do that so much, but young people do - Green The film, akin to a haunting melody, crescendos as micro-aggressions transform into macro threats. Hanna and Liv grapple with the persistent menace of violence, challenging societal expectations. Green eschews conventional horror narratives, opting for subtlety. The film's influences, ranging from zombie tropes to western motifs, provide a nuanced backdrop to the infectious chaos fueled by alcohol. Toby Wallace, Ursula Yovich, Daniel Henshall, James Frecheville, and Herbert Nordrum also join this cinematic journey. Premiering at Telluride, The Royal Hotel is produced by Iain Canning, Emile Sherman, Liz Watts, and Kath Shelper—a testament to Kitty Green and her visionary team's exploration into the heart of the Australian wilderness.

  • Bassendream brings 90's Nostalgia to SXSW Sydney

A Journey through 1990s Australia. Tim Barretto's debut feature film, Bassendream, shot on 16mm film, takes us on a nostalgic journey through 1990s Australia, specifically the suburb of Bassendean in Perth, Western Australia. The film has already made waves, earning its spot in the SXSW Sydney Lineup. A coming-of-age drama that unfolds over 24 hours on the final day of the summer school holidays in 1990s Australia. The film paints a vivid picture of suburban life, exploring themes of youth, friendship, and family. Using the unique tone and freewheeling rhythm of 16mm film, the movie delves into the tender interactions, eccentric escapades, and extreme independence that define growing up in a time when the internet had not yet saturated our lives with answers. The project was conceived over a decade ago when Barretto and his friends reminisced about their childhoods, discussing the unbridled freedom that shaped their characters. He portrays a time when children were left to their own devices, exploring the world during the day and returning home to the adults at night. The visual beauty of Bassendream is owed in large part to the remarkable cinematography by Oliver Hay. His skillful use of the 16mm film format captures the essence of the 1990s, immersing viewers in the time and place with each frame. Hay's work behind the camera adds a layer of authenticity and magic to the film. With roughly half of the cast and crew hailing from Bassendream itself, the production exudes a sense of community and authenticity. Auditions took place in the local community hall, and the process of casting involved playing games and identifying those who could embark on this cinematic journey. The collaborative spirit extended to the residents of Bassendean, who readily offered their homes and support for the film's production. Director Tim Barretto's inclusive approach allowed him to immerse himself in the community, giving him unprecedented access to the suburb's resources. He engaged with the locals, even enlisting passersby to participate in the film's creation. This inclusive style of filmmaking not only made the production a shared experience but also lent a genuine, lived-in quality to the final product. Emerging as a beautifully crafted slice of life, transporting audiences back to 1990s Australia. The film's universal themes of friendship, family, community, and belonging, set against the backdrop of a scorching Western Australian summer, is a reminder that sometimes, the most extraordinary stories are the ones that unfold in our own backyards. • Standing Strong with SAG-AFTRA and WGA

Standing with Sag-Aftra and Wga in a New Industry Chapter. Every scene, every line, and every emotion etched on screen is a result of the dedication and passion of artists and writers who pour their hearts and souls into their craft. These unsung heroes are the architects of our industry. Behind the glamour and glitz of the silver screen lies a tapestry of creativity that is all too often overlooked. Amid the ever-evolving landscape of the entertainment industry, a new chapter is being written, one that speaks to the heart of fairness, respect, and equitable treatment for these very creators. Today, as the industry grapples with the complexities of its own narrative, we, at Blinded by Rainbows, stand in solidarity with the artists of SAG-AFTRA and the writers of the WGA. We lend our voice to the artists demanding change, recognition, and a brighter future. In a world where stories are created, characters brought to life, the journey of an artist is far from effortless. The challenges they navigate echo through the annals of the industry. It's in this context that SAG-AFTRA's ongoing strike and the WGA's resolute advocacy gain prominence. These movements aren't just about contracts and deals, they're about redefining the ecosystem that nurtures and sustains creativity. The heart of these collective endeavors lies in the pursuit of fairness and dignity. The challenges faced by artists and writers are more than the sum of their efforts; they're a testament to the undying commitment they have towards their craft. In an age of digital marvels and storytelling wonders, the struggles faced by artists often remain veiled behind the glitzy exterior. Yet, the thread that weaves them together is unity. SAG-AFTRA and the WGA stand strong, resolute in their demand for change. Amplifying their voices for a fairer industry. SAG-AFTRA, in its commitment to unity and collaboration, has redefined its stance on interim agreements. This pivotal decision underscores the union's determination to amplify solidarity and navigate industry complexities. SAG-AFTRA will no longer extend interim agreements to projects governed by Writers Guild of America contracts produced within the U.S. This transformative decision follows "several productive and collaborative meetings" with the writers' union. It's a strategic maneuver aligned with the Writers Guild's ongoing strike and their decision to withhold interim deals during this period of advocacy. This alteration, as communicated by the SAG-AFTRA negotiating committee, is a result of shared objectives. It has been designed to align with the Writers Guild's strike strategy, creating a win-win situation for both unions. The core principles of unity and solidarity remain intact, ensuring a harmonious collective front in the face of industry challenges. It's important to emphasise that while this modification won't impact existing interim agreements, it will guide the union's approach moving forward. The intent is to ensure that these agreements uphold the principles of independence and creative integrity. Each application for an Interim Agreement will be scrutinized to ensure its alignment with these values. Interim agreements have sparked debate since their inception amid SAG-AFTRA's ongoing strike. Created to sustain production outside the jurisdiction of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, these agreements have garnered both support and critique. They provide a lifeline to productions adhering to SAG-AFTRA's priorities, including an 11 percent increase in minimum wages and revenue sharing for streaming projects. As the strike narrative unfolds, over 200 productions have secured these agreements, representing a diverse array of titles and talents. From A24's acclaimed works to star-studded Death of a Unicorn and Mother Mary, and even faith-based series like The Chosen, the embrace of these agreements reflects the intricate tapestry of the industry.
